The Best Lego Movie Ever Made
Why Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers is cinemas finest achievement
Introduction:
The concept of Lego has been something that has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I loved getting Lego sets and building them. I remember getting the Indiana Jones sets and I had so much excitement building them. That wasn’t the only thing that I loved about Lego though, I think what made me really love it is the stop motion films that people would make and post on YouTube. I used to be obsessed with the different types of videos that people would make. I would also have to sneak watch and not get caught by my parents watching the videos where they cursed lol. It inspired me to make some of my own and as bad as they were, I had a passion for them and I think it would also influence the love that I have for movies today. In 2014 when The Lego Movie came out, it was everything that I wanted out of a Lego movie and so much more. The passion and creativity that went into it was something that could’ve easily been done cheaply, but it wasn’t and I love that about the film. However, this wasn’t the only Lego film to do this as in 2010, we would get one of cinemas finest achievements as it was as Lego stated: “the first Lego movie on DVD (even though they forgot Bionicle existed lol).
Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers is one of the greatest things that cinema has been able to achieve in the medium. My life was changed getting this DVD in my easter basket in 2010. The shear amount of ambition that goes into the film is something unheard of before. There’s so many genres mixed in here that could easily kill a film, but this film does all of that so effortlessly here. It had comedy, romance, fantasy, sci fi, body horror, and so much more. The writing is off the charts as Shakespeare wishes he could right something as exceptional as this. The characters are very dimensional and they have so much development into them. When Martin Scorsese says “This is cinema” he’s not referring to any of those lame films like Citizen Kane or The Godfather, but this film right here. So today, I need to explain how this film achieves the mastery that it does.
Story:
Clutch Powers tells the story of the famous Clutch Powers and how much of a badass he is. Everyone loves this guy even to the point where he commits reckless driving and almost kills people, but everyone still loves him, But when he gets put onto an assignment where he has to work with other comrades, They are sent off on a quest to fight out what happened at a space police center holding an evil wizard. When the wizard gets away though, they head to a planet with a kingdom and must train a prince so they can not only save the kingdom, but save the world. Words can’t describe how complex and amazing this story gets. I only wish the movie was 7 hour long epic because 1 hour and 22 minutes truly isn’t enough for something this amazing. But despite the small runtime, it still manages to pull off one of the most inspirational stories that I have ever seen put onto a film. You will laugh, cry, be angry with the characters, be surprised with the characters, and more. It’s like being put into the Lego universe yourself and being part of the movement. Move over The Lego Movie, Clutch Powers is you, but better.
Characters:
The characters of Clutch Powers are compelling to follow. We obviously have Clutch Powers who is the greatest main character in any film. He’s cool, badass, and all the ladies love him. He’s like Indiana Jones but better (literally has the same torso used for his lego lol). He can build anything he wants and is the ultimate master builder. This is the man that Laszlo Toth from The Brutalist wishes he was. He is a dynamic character as we can see him develop into the best version of himself. He goes from not wanting to work with anyone to having a team and it’s some excellent character development (can’t believe The Lego Batman Movie stole this concept). But that’s not all we have from the main cast. We have Peg Mooring who is a biologist and she knows her shit. A complete badass in my book. Then we have Brick Masterson who’s a firefighter and a weapons specialist. This is the guy that you don’t want to mess with. Finally we have Bernie Von Beam who’s the engineer and knows his techincal shit in this group. This is the kinda guy that you want on this team. You have to villain also who is the Wizard Mallock the Malign who is one of the most complex villains ever created. Move over Darth Vader, you ain’t got shit on my boy Mallock. The legendary Prince Varan also is another character that goes through the deep development of becoming a king. The only king that matters in my book. But no character including Clutch compares to the comedic genius of Skelly and Bones. These guys are so fucking funny that I can’t believe someone could create characters this funny. Please Lego I’m begging release a spin off movie of these two as they very much deserve it. The characters of this movie are unbelievably amazing and deserve all the praise.
Writing/Jokes:
With compelling characters like this, you have to thank the writing for it and that’s exactly what I wanted to talk about here. The writing of Clutch Powers is top notch and uses the best dialogue possible in situations. Lines like “We don’t need seatbelts” only for them to need seatbelts and “who ordered a pizza in space” only for the pizza to show up in their ship is some of the comedic writing of all time in this masterpiece. Then we get jokes like Brick Masterson burping and naming all of the stuff he ate (haha) or the gang walking through a hallway only for them to get stuck trying to get through (haha). There’s so many clever ways the writing is used in the film that it would make someone like Charlie Kaufman wish he could write like this. Thank you Clutch Powers writing for the masterpiece.
Product placement:
One of things that I noticed about Clutch Powers is the shear amount of product placement placed through the film and as someone that grew up in this era of Lego. I noticed a ton of them right away. I noticed the sets from classics like Lego Mars Mission, Space Police, Castle, City and others that I can’t name on top of my head. I like that that Clutch’s torso is from the Indiana Jones sets. The Lego placement is so good that they even put Lego on the sleeve of Clutch’s back as well on the back of one of the scientist dudes. Just another amazing aspect of this film that deserves to be known.
Themes:
What really makes Clutch Powers a cinematic masterpiece is the themes that are presented in this film. One the surface level, you might think of Clutch Powers as some dumb kids movie (its not) that doesn’t have anything to say. But in reality it does. It goes into tackling the difficult themes of fascism, fighting for what you believe in, dealing with loss, and all sorts of difficult topics that other films are afraid of tackling. It is truly one of the films of all time tackling these issues that every day people go through. It’s one of the most complex films of all time that I’m sure other directors are jealous of not being able to tackle in their own right. Thank you Clutch Powers for tackling such difficult topics.
Conclusion:
Clutch Powers has done something that no other film has been able to do before with how it was able to tell this engaging and amazing story. It shows the ambition that goes into filmmaking and what it’s all about. When Nicole Kidman delivers her AMC Theaters monologue, this is the film that she’s talking about and nothing else. It’s a damn shame we never got a sequel to this because it surely does deserves one and Lego is missing out on the bank that they could make. The Lego Movie has taken all of the popularity away that this film had and while many have forgotten with time, I will never forget the masterpiece and what it stands for. It truly is a masterpiece of a film that deserves to be seen. Also Lego I’m begging you give me that Skelly and Bones spin off I need it.
This sounds great! Is this streaming somewhere? How can I watch this masterpiece?
