I’m kinda surprised that the concept of a Y2K apocalypse movie hasn’t really been attempted up until this point. This is one of those movies where you will either be down with the concept of what they’re going for or it will be excruciating to sit through with all the references it makes and how dumb it can be at times. For me though, I found myself on board with what they were going for most of the time. It’s a really dumb and cheesy horror comedy movie, but I found myself having a fun time watching it.
I think what I loved about the movie the most is how dumb it gets while also being entertaining, There’s a surprisingly amount of movies that have a dumb and funny concept, but are boring to watch. For this though, I found myself entertained throughout the film. I liked most of the actors and even though they are kinda given corny dialogue to work with, I think they still managed to make it work most of the time. Also f*cking Fred Durst being in this was bonus points for this movie. I also loved the use of practical effects that were used. The movie doesn’t really rely on CGI and used practical effects which I think added to the charm to what they were going for. The references also never really bothered me and I think added to the charm. They mention the movie Junior from 1994 which was one of those movies I always saw on TV for some reason, so I thought it was really funny for that movie to be referenced here.
I need this poster framed in my room lol
My biggest problem with this movie is the emotional moments don’t really hit as they should. There’s moments in the film where people die and emotional moments are happening, but with how dumbed down the movie is, they don’t really have an impact and kinda fall flat in execution. If they went for one big moment, I think it might have worked a bit better, but they try it different times throughout the movie and it doesn’t work for the movie’s favor. Another thing is the pacing does feel all over the place and doesn’t really stay consistent. There’s moments where things are happening really fast and then moments where it halts things to a stop. It overall felt inconsistent and I wasn’t a fan of it. Also the movie is really cheesy and while I was fine with it most of the time, there was some moments where it felt a bit too much for me and kinda annoyed me lol.
Overall though, I did a have a fun time watching Y2K. It’s one of those films where you’re either going to be down with what it goes for or not and for me, I was down with it. Not everything works for me, but I did leave the theater satisfied and happy with what I saw.
