When the “From the creators of Barbarian” text appeared in the first teaser for Companion it was something that intrigued me right from the get go. Barbarian was a film that surprised me with the twists and turns that the film had as well as going in as blind as possible into it. Even though the director of Barbarian acts as a producer for this film, I was still excited to see how this would turn out. I’m happy to say that it was fun film to watch and I enjoyed my time watching it.
To start off, I overall enjoyed the story the movie was able to present. It wasn’t anything too complicated or groundbreaking and you could say that maybe the movie could have done a better job at exploring the themes that the film had, but I mostly just found myself engaged with the story that the film decided to tell. I also thought Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid were great in the lead roles and they shared a great chemistry with each other. The rest of the cast as well is great and I think it helps that this movie doesn’t have that many characters which makes them stand out more. I think the pacing is also very breezy to get through and it never feels like a scene is too long or short which I think helped keep my interest through the film. This movie is overall really fun to watch and that’s what I mostly got out of my experience watching it. Nothing crazy or anything, but I was thoroughly enjoyed the film for what it was. Kinda crazy this is from the writer of Fred 3 though lol.
I did have a couple of issues during the film. I felt the third act had a little too many plot conveniences that did take me out of the film a bit and I think they could’ve handled some of the ways they take the plot in a better way. Also it would’ve been more interesting if the film stayed mysterious a little longer than it did as it does give away a lot of the mystery behind everything not too long into the film and I think it could’ve made for more interesting scenarios to play around with if it stayed mysterious a little longer
One last thing to mention is it’s not a problem with the film itself, but the way the film was marketed showing some of the twists that this movie has which I don’t know why they would do that. I found one of the twists spoiled for me because of a Tik Tok I saw marketing the movie and I was disappointed to see that considering I do like to go into movies mostly blind. I won’t take away points for the film because of that, but I recommend just watching the movie knowing nothing because with that, I think it will make the experience much better.
Overall: Companion is a fun movie that I overall really enjoyed. I recommend not checking out any trailers though because it spoils way too much of the film which is disappointing to see. But the film itself is still a fun treat to watch and I would recommend it.
